The spermiogramm is a test to analyze the semen which is a fluid containing spermatozoa and seminal plasma. The most common way to collect the sperm sample is by masturbation, directing the semen into a sterile container. The sample must be tested in the laboratory within the next hour.
The sperm analysis checks several physical aspects of the sample such as volume, PH or liquefaction, although the most important part of the test is the microscopic study. This will give us information on the most relevant parameters of the sample and its fertility potential: concentration, motility and morphology of the spermatozoa.

The reference values fixed by the World Health Organization in 1999 to assess the sperm parameters are detailed below:
Since the concentration and quality of the sperm may fluctuate it is often necessary to repeat the semen analysis more than once.
The evaluation of all the semen parameters by a specialist will help us make a first diagnosis and based on these results decide which additional tests will be required to find out the source of the alterations and the possible solutions.
If sperm abnormalities are detected a consultation with the anthologist will be absolutely necessary. He will carry out further investigations on the male and contribute to the treatment plan.
