There are several situations where the fertility of man or a woman may be seriously compromised. Recent advances in the field of assisted reproductive technology make now possible the preservation of the fertility in these cases.
Sperm or testicular tissue freezing allows men to keep their gametes stored for a long period of time. This option should be offered prior to men starting treatment against cancer or having their testicles removed or when an extremely low sperm count may lead to azoospermia (complete absence of sperm in the ejaculate).
The egg vitrification technique allows women to freeze their eggs keeping their viability and reproductive potential. This procedure is specially recommended in women who will receive chemotherapy or radiotherapy, will have their ovaries removed or who simply wish to delay motherhood.
